On the concept of science and spirituality

Science on self-realization

Srila Prabhupada: "These boys are after God. It is not that I have shown him God, but they are realizing, understanding. Otherwise they are not so fool they'll waste time. They are understanding. But it is not a subject matter to be seen like this. Neither you have got the eyes to see, neither God or His kingdom is visible in that way. It is to be realized. Revelation. That is called revelation. But if you engage yourself in the service of the Lord, everything will be revealed to you. This is the process." (Bhagavad-gītā 3.27, Melbourne. June 27, 1974)

In the same lecture, Prabhupada says: “It is not a sectarian... It is very scientific movement.” We must say humbly that this old concept of science, meaning a philosophical understanding, is not in use anymore. In antiquity, philosophy was a scientific discipline. When electricity was discovered by capturing a thunder, that notion of science moved away from philosophy and metaphysics; science became independent and the queen of all disciplines.

A scientific minded person -one who doubts and criticizes- will ask: what "everything" means? Or, when a revelation happens, how the devotee's subjective and dynamic understanding helps him for a better analysis of the information received? Is the result of understanding through revelation different from reading the books? Can we give examples of such devotees having used this process, and the advantages he had acquired?

It is part of the process to doubt and enquire. Maharaja Parikshit in the Srimad-Bhagavatam gave the example, he doubted and asked questions to be enlighten.
